Losing money through draughty windows?

At a time when we are all trying to keep costs down, especially around our home, its worth checking for draughts that can be cured. The usual culprits for letting the heat out are window hinges and the gasket and seals which can perish. Both are replaceable with reasonable diy skills and at a fraction of the cost of new windows and doors.

How much could you save by draught-proofing?
Draught-proofing around windows and doors could save you around £60 a year*.

Draught-free homes are comfortable at lower temperatures – so you may be able to turn down your thermostat, saving even more on your energy bills.

* Savings based on a typical gas-fuelled semi-detached property in England, Scotland or Wales.

Don’t block everything up totally though as ventilation is really important. Air needs to flow in and out of your house so it stays fresh, dry and healthy.

Make sure you don’t block or seal any intentional ventilation, including:
Extractor fans
Underfloor grilles or airbricks
Wall vents
Trickle vents – modern windows often have small vents above them to let fresh air trickle in.
