Think about door handles for a brief moment. How many door handles did you touch today? How many different kinds of door handle did you encounter? I would be willing to bet that there are more than you ever realized.

Really! There are hundreds of styles, shapes, colors, and sizes of door handles. They are one of those things that most of us take for granted, but if you really sit back and think about the function of a door handle... you may find yourself taken aback by its relevance to your everyday life.

Door handles, of course, are used to open and close doors. So, they are really an extension of the door itself. Without doors we would have no need for the handle part, right? So we can see that the invention of the door handle has come from the idea of needing a door, a relatively flat piece of material on hinges made to partition one space from another.

Of course, some doors have no handle at all. For instance, those swinging doors you simply push to enter a store's back storage room or a restaurant's kitchen.

Door handles often go hand in hand with a door lock. To keep intruders out (or to keep prisoners and grounded teenagers in), you need a door - one that locks - and a way to unlock it for those privileged enough to be granted access through.

So the handle is really a piece of our everyday lives that we often take for granted. But let's go back to the variety of door handles. Have you thought of how many different ones you've encountered just today? There are so many styles, some are not even worthy of being called a "handle". The kind used to pull a door open shall not be named a handle; only those that rotate the locking mechanism inside the door jam in order to release and open the door.

So now we know the definition and function of a door handle. If you are looking for a specific kind of door handle for your home or business, or simply for collecting purposes, you probably already know how many variations are out there.

Try to match the style of the house and the door you will be using the handle on. If you have a modern home, you may want to choose a very clean looking chrome or metallic door handle.

If you have a typical, British home, built in the past few decades you probably have exterior doors made from upvc. Your neighbours probably have the same. Many of the original upvc doors had chunky square door handles which can now be replaced with stylish modern door handles.

Whatever your style, the door handle is definitely a necessity in today's modern society. Almost every structure or building has several door handles, so be sure to take an extra moment to appreciate them the next time you find yourself reaching down to open a door.
